Spiral Bevel Gears have teeth that are curved on the arc of a circle when produced by the Gleason spiral bevel gear generator. In standard production, DE’RAN spiral bevel gears are proportioned according to the Gleason system.

Spiral bevel gears are precision cut from alloy steel, then gas carburized and lapped in sets according to AGMA standards. Spiral bevel gears are designed to give a minimum 86,000 hours of service at catalogue ratings. Larger gear sets are die quenched to maintain flatness during the heat treat process. Gears are finished to AGMA quality level 9-10.

When your project calls for higher precision gearing, we have two options available. Gears up to 27 inches in diameter may be finished by grinding the teeth of both members. Precision of class 10 to 13 is achievable.

For gears up to 52 inches in diameter, the gear and pinion may be finished by hard cutting after heat treat. Normally, hard cut gearing is manufactured using the Klingelnberg bevel gear generator. After preparation of the soft gear blanks, the teeth are generated using the continuous indexing system. This face hobbing, continuous indexing system produces the Klingelnberg Cyclo-Palloid gear set. The gear teeth are carburized, case hardened and then HPG-S hard finished. The HPG-S cutter blades use a polycrystalline cubic boron nitride (CBN) cutting surface. This process regenerates gearing after hardening to AGMA 11 -13 tolerances with surface finishes of 10 to 16 RMS.

The DE’RAN GEAR catalogue has an AGMA 1.5 Service Factor already built into all the gear rating charts. This is done to speed up the selection process when matching the gear drive to the driven load.
